Helston Makes It! is a week-long annual celebration of trade, makers and craft. This year, the festival celebrates glorious glass.
Saturday 19 September
Silver & Sea Glass Workshop
Time of workshop: 12.30pm – 3.30pm
Join jewellery artist and tutor Anna Pope to create your own, beautiful sea glass pendant. You will learn how to create a traditional bezel setting to transform a piece of sea glass into a wearable silver pendant. This workshop is suitable for complete beginners.
Anna will bring along a selection of sea glass with her for you to choose from or if you have a piece if sea glass you would like to use please contact her direct once you have booked your place to check that it will be suitable.
Please note: You will be using heavy tools, so please do not wear open toed shoes and if you have long hair we ask that you tie it back during the workshop.

Free Talk: Windows of the past- Glass Conservation at the Museum
Start Time: 2pm
Join Collections Curator Issy Bloomfield to hear about our Glass Conservation Project which allowed us to conserve three historic windows in the collection. This talk will give you a glimpse of how we care for the items in our collection: learn more about the objects, their history and what we have uncovered through research; find out the process of how museums can clean and look after glass items; and hear what the conservators did to ensure the long term stability of these beautiful windows.
This project was possible thanks to a grant from AIM Museum Fundamentals funded by Pilgrim Trust and The Julia Rausing Trust.

Mullion Glass Studio Workshop
Workshop Time:1.30pm – 3.30pm
As part of our celebration of glass this year for Helston Makes It! join Zoe Schoning from Mullion Glass Studio for this fantastic, fun two-hour workshop. She will guide you step-by-step to make your own unique piece of glass art, suitable for total beginners.
Since 2016 Zoe has run her own studio in Mullion where every item is inspired by the Cornish coast, its shifting skies, clear waters, and warm community spirit. Zoe’s love for glass was sparked when she was given a small fused-glass pendant as a gift from her mum when she was a child. She now wants to share this passion and hopes that same sense of joy shines through each creation you make and that it will bring as much happiness to you as it does to her.
Cost £20 – all materials supplied.

Free Talk ad Q & A: Glass Stories of the Costume Store by Andrea Newall
Talk Times: 2pm – 3pm
This is a chance to see some of the collection that is rarely on display. Guided by Andrea our resident dress historian and costume curator you are invited to look at and explore some of the many personal objects made from glass that were used in daily lives in the past. From hat pins to perfume bottles, jewellery to pince-nez and elements of clothing such as beads, come and see glass in some of its most decorative facets.

Perfect Pin Cushions
Free Drop-in workshop
Workshop times:11am – 1pm
We love to re-use and recycle at Museum of Cornish Life so come along and learn how to turn empty jam jars into perfect pincushions or just a beautifully decorated storage jars for all your bits and bobs.
Jars will be supplied but we encourage you to bring one that you have, that you particularly like as they do come in all shapes and sizes.

Cornwall Wood Carvers
Free Drop In demonstration event 10am – 1pm
Cornwall Wood Carvers join us once to demonstrate the skills of wood carving and share their knowledge of this ancient art form. There will be an opportunity to ‘have a go’ at whittling or carving for adults.

We will be running two sessions: 10.30am – 12.30 and 1.30pm – 3.30pm
Come along and make your very own colourful, paper lantern with a stained glass effect.
All materials supplied, no experience needed.
