Created by the Tregellas Foundation (established by Rita Tregellas Pope) in the 1990s to ‘advance the knowledge and understanding of Cornwall’s cultural heritage’. The tapestries were made by embroiderers from across Cornwall, inspired by the Bayeux Tapestry, and each takes a theme from Cornish history or mythology and vibrantly illustrates it.
This exhibition is part of “Bayeux Around Britain, supported by WorldQuant’ a nationwide programme designed by the British Museum to communicate the story and significance of the Bayeux Tapestry to as many people as possible, through a network of more than 60 National Partners. As part of this incredible project, we will be showing a specially made film of the Bayeux Tapestry which will give the context of the tapestry, explain who commissioned it, who made it, and where. The film will then continue to describe the events and story told through the tapestry.

The image above is an extract from Bayeux Tapestry showing Robert of Mortain seated to the left of William the Conqueror with his sword half sheafed. By 1086 Robert of Mortain held over a thousand English manors; many of his estates were concentrated in the south-west and in Cornwall his position was clearly exceptional.
