Steps to Connect was a project designed to improve connectivity and access between the museum and our neighbour, the visual arts organisation, CAST, by installing a set of granite steps. This new link also sees the refurbishment of the cobbled ope creating a more welcoming route between the two buildings. In doing the work the project has opened up a new pedestrian pathway into the historic heart of the town. The steps are being opened on 20 March as part of Spring Thing.
The project was made possible thanks to a grant award of £151,317 by the UK Government through the UK Shared Prosperity Fund. The funding was allocated through Cornwall Council’s Town Regeneration and Investment Programme, which is part of the Cornwall and Isles of Scilly Good Growth Programme. Additional match funding of 25% (£50,439) came from our own funds and the generosity of CAST, Helston Place Shaping Board and Helston Town Council including support from the Mayor’s Fund.
Work started in September 2025 to repair the wall that runs up the side of the pedestrian route in preparation for the steps.

The steps were then constructed by CGS with granite from Tim Marsh Ltd at Trenoweth Quarry and railings by Helston Fabrications.
