3D Scanning the Costume Collection

In 2020 the museum started a project with Purpose 3D, a local start up from the Falmouth Launchpad Programme who specialise in the digitisation of historical and vintage clothing. This expanded on work the museum had begun in 2017. You can view all our models on SketchFab.

The company uses photogrammetry to capture the items and 3D modelling technology to transform them into authentic models. The aim of this project is to display the museum’s diverse collection in a modern and interactive way, allowing us to share items of local importance more widely.

Purpose 3D co-founder, Amy Hardman explained: “Each item of clothing has a story to tell, be it a war uniform, a pair of mining trousers, a Victorian maternity dress or a Flora Day dress. This project will allow us to share the collection with an entirely new audience.”

The scanning process has been supported by Costume Volunteer, Andrea who has enjoyed discovering some of ‘the wonderful stories’ brought to life by the project, particularly those connected to local families.
