“It’s a crowded hell.”

Overrated Cornwall is a recent addition to our contemporary collection. In summer 2023 we organised an exhibition of original artworks displayed throughout the museum by photographer, artist and designer Sally Mitchell of Mevagissey. The exhibition was supported by Feast Cornwall.

In the summer of 2022 Sally became frustrated with the outrageous but also hilarious 1-star reviews of Mevagissey and she created holiday poster-style art using their words. When she posted them on social media it caused a storm among Cornish locals and the Overrated Cornwall collection was extended to other Cornish places like St Ives, Polzeath and Kynance Cove. Every piece makes you look twice.

Sally’s artworks are also a humorous take on the more serious issue of overtourism in Cornwall. The entire Overrated Cornwall series has been accessioned into the Museum’s collection as part of our effort to document contemporary Cornish life.
