Donations to the collections:

We collect items according to our Arts Council England Accredited Collections Development Policy. Like many museums in the UK we struggle with a lack of space, and as a museum of social history and ‘everyday people’ it is important to us to ensure our collections reflect the contemporary communities of Helston, South Kerrier and Cornwall at large.

We therefore have strict criteria for new acquisitions.

Our policy sets out the following criteria for collecting:

The basic remit of the Museum will continue to be to collect items directly relating to the history of Helston and the surrounding area (within the boundary of the Helston & South Kerrier Community Network Area).  This geographical area will be expanded if the object in question is felt to be of particular importance to Cornish heritage. Future collecting will be strictly restricted to this with the additional limiting consideration of storage space and conservation requirements.

The Museum will attempt to collect more contemporary items, including digital assets (for example oral histories). There is very little in the collection that dates beyond the 1960s.”

“By definition, the Museum has a long-term purpose and holds collections in trust for the benefit of the public in relation to its stated objectives. The governing body therefore accepts the principle that sound curatorial reasons must be established before consideration is given to any acquisition to the collection, or the disposal of any items in the Museum’s collection.”

Under no circumstances should you post items you would like to donate to the museum.

If you think you have an item that will be of interest to the museum and its visitors and researchers, it is best to make an enquiry by email with good photographs of the item(s) and a clear description of its relevance to the history of the people of Helston, South Kerrier and Cornwall.
