Work with Us – Trainee Curator Post

We are offering an exciting opportunity to join our friendly and dedicated team as Trainee Curator. Working with a small staff team (Director, Community Engagement Curator, Customer Service Apprentice and Finds Liaison Officer) and a large team of volunteers you will get to experience all aspects of museum work. The focus of the role will be assisting with a range of collections projects including collections documentation, exhibitions, digital and community engagement.

The Trainee Curator role is part of a programme that is produced and delivered by Claire English with Cornwall Museums Partnership (CMP). Offering mentoring and training through a series of 121s, meetings, tasks and study trips, Claire regularly brings together the cohort of Trainees from across the participating museums (Museum of Cornish Life, Falmouth Art Gallery, Wheal Martyn Clay Works, Bodmin Keep and Royal Cornwall Museum) to meet and support each other through peer network meetings. Together the trainees visit museums across Cornwall and the UK getting to meet a range of museum professionals. A series of assignments and training will support your experience and the help with the delivery of an exhibition or project at the Museum of Cornish Life. Each Trainee receives a significant training budget to develop your individual needs and interests.

The Trainee Curator Programme is for emerging professionals. Together, participants, CMP, and the museums shape the programme. We aim to offer supportive, empowering and relevant work experience. We welcome applicants from all backgrounds. We will shortlist applications anonymously and make fair decisions. We are committed to accessibility; please alert us to any needs you have for the interviews or Traineeship in general. One of our 2018 cohort wrote about her experience as a disabled Trainee Curator, which you can read here.
